Archive Contents

The archive of the three sister newspapers of record (the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes) is an important source of information for researchers. Used by professional researchers and authors for military and social history, as well as family history hobbyists, the archive has a wealth of information.

We have started to catalogue in broad terms the content of the London Gazette, commencing with a Medal Table and we hope to make similar information available for the Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes in future.

It is important to remember that the archive is the result of publishing over a period of nearly 350 years, although it has a common thread of purpose running through it – to disseminate and record official, regulatory and legal information - presentation has evolved and both the way that the publishers view the world and the resources at their disposal have changed.

In addition, the very breadth of information can make searches complex. We have done everything that we can to make the tools on this website as simple as possible to use and you may find what you are looking for with ease, but do use the FAQs or How to Guides as much as possible as they contain our accumulated knowledge about how to get the best from the online archive. If necessary, treat the website as a library and leaf through the volumes of the era in which you are interested.

The last 24 months' indexes are available in printed form from the TSO Bookshop.

For older indexes try your local main reference library or a regional library.

The London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazette archives comprise around two million pages, 1% of titles are not presently on the website.
