Information for Policy Makers

TSO publishes the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes under the authority and superintendence of the Controller of Her Majesty’s Stationery Office. The Gazettes constitute the Government's Official Newspaper of Record and are able to provide users with a single source of regulatory and legal information in print, online and electronic formats.

The Gazettes continue to be an efficient method of recording and disseminating up-to-date relevant information to professional and specialist audiences. For example, information published in insolvency notices in the gazettes, has for many years been at the heart of the financial and corporate credit industries.

Placing a Gazette notice can be the most cost effective method for particular information to be communicated to particular interest groups and provides:

  • Ready made infrastructure for making official information available
  • The scaleability associated with 5,000 advertisers each year
  • No cost to government
  • Free of charge online access to all information
  • Sophisticated electronic and traditional submission mechanisms
  • Strong relationships with statutory advertising agency specialists
  • A permanent record, a comprehensive online and printed archive from 1665
  • Sophisticated datafeeds for specialist users of government information
  • Expertly compiled indexes for libraries
  • Information specified in more than 1,000 clauses of legislation

In addition, the Gazettes focus on both the needs of users of information and the formats for now and the future. Gazette notices are optimal vehicles for the re-use of public sector information by third parties, enabling the UK to get maximum value from government information.

This facility fits well within the Government's agenda for the re-use of public sector information and the Power of Information Review which was Commissioned by the Cabinet Office, and explored the Government's role in maximising the benefits for communities through new technologies and online tools. More about the review can be found here.

A demonstration of information re-use and Gazette data is this treatment of integrated pollution prevention and control notices. This uses London Gazette notices to enable analysis of the impact of legislative clauses, the geography and timing of applications and other useful information.
